Basic Bible Quiz… Part One.

Check out this article titled, “Basic Religion Test Stumps Most Americans.”  interestingly, atheists and Jews did better than Christians.  God willing, tomorrow an intermediate (Non-seminary) Bible Quiz will be presented.

Several years ago I gave a basic quiz to a Sunday night crowd I served as pastor.  It was an introduction to a basic discipleship program.  Of those present (About 100), the average score ended up being a 46%.  These were adults… Sunday night attenders (usually more devoted and mature)… and the average grade was still failing.  Here it is… (FYI: I blame preachers for a congregation’s lack of knowledge).  There is a link to answers at the end of this post.

What is the “third Gospel?”

Name one of the three men in Jesus’ inner circle of Apostles.

What book is the Sermon On The Mount in?  (Extra point: What chapters?)

Who denied Jesus… Judas or Peter?

On what day of the week was Jesus crucified?

In what book is the account of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments?  (Extra point, What Chapter?)

Write out your favorite verse of Scripture (With reference)… John 3:16 doesn’t count for this question.

Briefly explain one of the following: Justification, Imputation, Eschatology.

Name one book of Wisdom Literature.

Who tried to walk on water, but failed?

Who wrote almost 1/3 of the New Testament?

What is required in order to be saved?

Most Christians have what I call a “John 3:16” faith.  It would be like an adult trying to function in the world with only a 6th grade education.  They can function, they just can’t thrive.  Here’s what is written elsewhere about this level of maturity (Hebrews 5:11 to 6:3)…

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.  6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.
