“This IS God’s Will?!”

Is it possible to say with absolute 100% certainty something IS God’s will?  Yes.  It IS God’s will to…

Keep the Ten Commandments…

Forgive as we have been forgiven…

Love others…

Make disciples of all nations…

Live according to what has been written in God’s Word (The Bible)…

Did you catch that… “What has been written in God’s Word?”  Past those things, I do not think it is possible to say with 100% absolute complete unequivocal certainty something IS God’s will.  To say something IS without any doubt God’s will is a phrase that should be handled carefully with fear and trembling.  Then again… I need to qualify that last statement.  Let me explain…

God does His will in all things at all times with all people.  In that sense the events of life (Many of which are kept in the secret wisdom of God) are His will…

Isaiah 46:9 Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose…’

Daniel 4:34 His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and He does according to His will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth;  and none can stay His hand or say to Him, “What have you done?”

But what about decisions WE make?  How certain can we be that what we choose IS God’s will?  70%?  80%?  95%?  99.9%?  And if we can’t be 100% certain, should we EVER follow through on something and risk going against God and His will?  Tough questions… at least for me.

I’ve come to the conclusion that we are able to say… “As best I can discern, this is God’s will.  All the indicators point to this being God’s will, but the only way to know is to act and trust Him with the outcome.  Therefore I am going to rest on Isaiah 46:9-10, Proverbs 3:5, Psalm 37:4, and Romans 8:28.  I will trust God who ‘works all things afer the counsel of His will’ (Ephesians 1:11-B) that He will change my course and direct all things as He wills for His glory.”

So WHAT can we do to be as certain as possible that a decisions we make IS God’s will?  Here are my suggestions:

1) Gather all the available information, 2) Counsel with people more wise and godly than yourself, 3) Seek God through prayer and Scripture, 4) Make a decision, 5) Trust God with the outcome without regret…

After a decision is made, continue seeking God asking Him to glorify His name…

It IS right and proper to pray to God… “THY will BE DONE.”  The result is to trust that what happens AFTER we make a choice or decision is as God willed it.

Live in James 4:13… “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’ 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.”

  1. It is difficult to believe that we could separate ourselves 100% from our desires and be completely objective about what he wants. I think that we will be shocked if he ever shows us what he really wanted for our lives compared to how our lives actually turned out because we followed our own way.
