God Did What?!

“What can God Do?”  The answer… “Whatever He chooses.”  The next question is… “Why can He do it?” The answer… “Because He is God.”

Let us consider for a few days some things God has done that He didn’t consult anyone about doing.  These thoughts might challenge your perception of God…

In Genesis 20:1-7 it it recorded that King Abimelech was a man who decided to Add Abraham’s wife Sarah to his harem.  One night after he did that, God appeared to the King in a dream saying (Paraphrased)… “You are going to die because Sarah is a married woman.”  This scared the king because he was innocent in the matter (Both Abraham and Sarah lied by saying they were siblings).  The king pleaded with God not to kill him because he was ignorant of the true circumstances.

God agreed with Abimelech’s plea and then told the king something interesting.  God said (Paraphrased)… “I know you’re innocent.  I KEPT YOU FROM SINNING AGAINST ME… I DIDN’T LET YOU TOUCH HER…”  Think!  GOD kept King Abimelech from doing something he otherwise would have done.  GOD prevented King Abimelech from sinning!  Does that mean God violated the Kings free will?  NO.  It means God kept the king from sinning without violating his will!

Again… What can God do?  WHY?

I’m glad and thankful God can (Probably has and does) over-rule my stupidity and propensity to sin!  In fact… I WANT God to do that.  My guess is you have the same desire.  Only in heaven will it be revealed how many times God acted on my and your behalf to protect us, and yes… from doing something stupid called sin.  Yet but another reason to worship and praise the all powerful God!

Here is the passage in case you didn’t want to follow the link above…

Genesis 20:1 From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. 3  But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.” 4 Now Abimelech had not approached her. So he said, “Lord, will you kill an innocent people? 5 Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.” 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her. 7 Now then, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you, and all who are yours.” ESV
